We have started a new unit in math! The kids are excited to be working with place value and exploring how numbers relate to each other. This week we have been practicing different ways to represent numbers and how to count on. They are doing a wonderful job and were excited when I showed them that they are actually doing 2-digit and 3-digit addition! Below is a picture to show how we have been counting on.
First the students draw the number they are starting with using base ten blocks and label it. We draw a box around the picture to show that this is the number we are starting at. Next, they count on by finding a benchmark number. A benchmark is a number that makes the number easier to work with, such as the next set of ten or hundred.
Ask your child to show you how to count from 95 to 400, from 200 to 503, and from 600 to 847!
