Coming Home Monday...

On Monday a few important papers will be coming home. Please look in your child's backpack for their homework folder and read the papers that are inside.

1. Swimming paperwork: We will be going to the Aquatic Center for swimming lessons this year. Please fill out the paperwork and get it back to me as soon as possible.

2. Picture order forms: Please be sure that the order form your child brings home has his/her name on it.

3. Book Order: This is a great opportunity for you to get books to read at home. You can either order online or send in the order form and a check written to Scholastic Books Club.

4. Homework: Second grade homework is a choice menu. Go over the menu with your child and discuss which boxes he/she will complete during the week. Your child only needs to do 4 boxes, but can do more. I suggest putting a dot in the corner of the boxes that you want your child to complete, or that you can help them with during the week. I completely understand if some of the boxes do not fit with your schedule during a given week, that is why we give choice! You can help your child pick the boxes or assign them the ones you want them to work on. Again, they only have to do 4. Homework will come home every Monday and is due the following Monday.

Also, at some point during the week we are going to walk to downtown Douglas to see our community. This will be a quick walk and we will only be out of the building for about 45 minutes to an hour. We learn about our local community in second grade, so what better way to learn than to go see it!

Rock the Walk Update!

Hello families!  Hopefully you all have seen the Rock the Walk Walk-a-Thon information.  If your kids collect money for Rock the Walk in cash/checks outside of the online donation webpage, please have them turn it in to their classroom teacher on the following days: Sept 13, Sept 20, and Sept 25. This helps us track how our class is doing, as well as make sure funds do not get misplaced. Thank you so much for your help with this!  And a little update...so far the kids have raised $1,820 in just 2 days!!  We appreciate ALL your EFFORTS!

Thank you!!

Rock the Walk!

Families,
It is nearly time for our Rock The Walk 2019. This is a fun family event following the fundraiser planned by our amazing PTO. The event is free to ALL DES families, regardless of participation in the fundraiser. It encourages healthy movement, and is awesome!
This event will be at the High School Football Field on Friday, September 27th, at 5:30-7:30 pm. Let's Rock this thing!
If you are able to participate in the fundraiser portion of this event please see details that your child brought home after our kickoff assembly today or go to https://www.getmovinfundhub.com/classroom-teacher-webpage/5d4c2d901e41f There are incentives for the highest-earning classroom etc.
In addition, Mrs. Jackson will provide 1 extra recess on the best weather day possible when we have reached 1/2 our classroom goal! Indoor recess will be substituted if necessary. (That is one extra recess from me when we have exceeded $712.50) WOOHOO! Let's get moving!
I would like to thank everyone in advance for any contribution to this DES fundraising event, classroom supplies, and other donations, the support you provide through volunteering, and simply participating in this amazing event for our students. I realize not all families can spare funds. Your overall support is recognized and appreciated. Also a huge thank you to our PTO for everything they provide, and community sponsors who have already donated, not just this year, but previously as well. We are grateful!
THANKS!

Our first days!

Our first couple of days have gone really well! I enjoy getting to know each of the students and watching friendships develop! Based on the first two days, I can already tell this is going to be an awesome year!

Just a reminder, we have P.E. on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Please make sure your child has appropriate shoes for those days.

Thank you to everyone who filled out the information sheet about your child and returned it. They really help me to get to know your child as a learner and a person. I like to use this information to help me plan lessons and activities. I love the surprised looks on their faces when I talk about a connection we have that they did not even know about! If you ever have any questions, comments, or concerns, please do not hesitate to email me. When we work together to help your child, your child can reach the stars!

If you have not updated your PowerSchool account, please do this A.S.A.P. We use this information to help us contact you in an emergency.

Thank you for sharing your children with me this year. I am a very lucky teacher!

Welcome Second Grade Families!

Welcome to a spectacular year in second grade! I am looking forward to getting to know each of our families throughout this year. It takes a village, and I am glad we are all a part of our village! Working together, we can make this a fabulous year!

Thank you for signing up for our classroom blog. Throughout the year I will use the blog to update you about what is happening in class. I will try to put in important events that are coming up and remind you about deadlines.

Parents are always asking me how they can help their child at home. Some general ideas are to ask specific questions about what they learned during the school day. If you are not sure what questions to ask, you can get some ideas from our homework when we send it home.  Also, read with your child DAILY! Remember that learning to read takes a lot of energy and practice. They need us to read to them in order to model what good reading sounds like. They also need to practice reading to someone else. A great tip is to have your child read to you while you are making dinner, read to a sibling, or even have them read to a stuffed animal. Taking turns reading a page each is also fun! Lastly, one of the best things you can do to help your child be successful in school is to talk about school with a positive attitude. When they hear us talk about good things, they focus on the good. This helps build self-confidence, courage to take risks, and enjoyment at school.

This is going to be an amazing year!

Cleaning Out Desks

On Thursday, we will be cleaning out our desks. If you have a reusable bag at home, similar to the one pictured below, please send it before Thursday. If you do not have a reusable bag, large brown paper grocery bags work great! I have a few paper grocery bags in case someone needs one.
