As the video explains, the new math curriculum makes an amazing connection between learning how to compute numbers and learning the reasoning behind the important role of place value. It teaches the students to be thinkers, not just repeat an algorithm. I can say from experience that teaching math in the new curriculum has better prepared my students to take on real world problems and use critical thinking to solve them.
